Google released the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro high-end phones last month without saying much about a possible sequel to the mid-range Pixel 6a. Nevertheless, the company is developing the so-called Pixel 7a to fill the gap in the mid-range segment. And according to a new report, Google’s upcoming midrange handset will feature a display supplied by Samsung. Samsung Display is reportedly the main supplier for the existing Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, and new evidence suggests that Google will continue relying on the Korean display giant. The unannounced Pixel 7a should feature a 1080p panel with a 90Hz refresh rate supplied by Samsung Display.
The Pixel 6a also had a 1080p panel from Samsung Display. But comparatively, the screen used by the Pixel 6a was limited to a refresh rate of 60Hz — although some people have seemingly found ways to trick it into running at 90Hz. Nevertheless, if this new report is accurate, there will be no need for such workarounds for the upcoming Pixel 7a. The panel supplied by Samsung Display for the Pixel 7a should support 90Hz out of the box, which would be a noteworthy upgrade over the Pixel 6a. Samsung Display is one of the best display suppliers in the industry, and this goes beyond rigid panels used by most smartphones with a “candy bar” form factor. The company is also miles ahead of the competition in terms of foldable display technology, and it’s no wonder that Google is maintaining close ties with Samsung’s display arm. The Pixel 7a’s display supplier discovered that the Pixel Fold carries the codename “Felix.” The Felix will reportedly feature a foldable panel supplied by none other than Samsung. The same company will also supply rigid cover screens for the Pixel Fold. Google might unveil its first foldable phone in Q1 2023.
